Sunday I drove the Alfa. Not far, and not fast, but I made a few laps around the neighborhood and cleared the pipes and bit. The engine pulled hard, although I probably need to run some Seafoam and replace the fuel filter. Wheels need balancing and tires need air (hopefully they aren't flat spotted). Might as well replace the air filter too. The idle was a little wobbly so I punched up the throttle a little (should idle smoothly at 800 RPM, had to increase to 1,000) until I can fiddle with the AFM and throttle body. No smoke, no weird noises. Brakes were weak, so I plan to bleed them this week. Have to replace a stripped rear bleeder though. Camlock tool in hand. And of course it needs to be THOROUGHLY cleaned, polished, and waxed.
But man. Was it good to be behind the wheel. Once I get the issues sorted, hopefully over the next week or so, I'll post up some video of a short drive. Maybe I can find a way to mount my Zoom recorder by the exhaust. The sound is as glorious as I remember.

One of my neighbors just bought a black 930 911 and a black GTV6. I haven't talked to him yet, I don't really speak Japanese very well so its hard to chat with the neighbors. I am curious how he ended up with both in one week! My wife is not really interested in translating for guys talking about cars haha

Mine has blue interior as well. I replaced the original Alfetta-style seats with some Recaro mesh heads form an '83, but the headrests are black, so I need to recolor them. I think I might SEM the door cards, too. I painted the dash and console with SEM shadow blue, which was an almost perfect match, but after it cured it darkened up a bit. It's PROBABLY close to the original color, but since most of the interior has faded some...
Should I tint the windows? I'm leaning toward yes. Without AC it's probably a good idea. Some dark UV protectant film would probably help.

I had mine tinted, I remember the rear winding windows to be a PITA for some reason, but it looked good when done.

I'm wondering if it wouldn't be cheaper, easier and produce better results to just take the rear glass out? Hell, I could remove all of the glass in less than an hour. I'll ask the tint shop...

That's a hell of a combination! I think if I were to get another car it would be something American. But still weird, like a Cosworth Vega.

Hey gimmi, I haven't seen you round these parts in a while! So you live in Japan? Any good car spotting?

I am there much of the time but I go home to Europe and to San Francisco where my daughter is. I think the Japanese are the most loving car enthusiasts, they create a space for the car and really care for them. I do see some really great classics here, some Japanese and some European and American. I saw a Cosmo the other day, I still want one. Many American cars have been left here from military personnel. I was in my 74' 911 the other night and an MP4-12C accompanied by a Gallardo came up near me for a few miles, two guys out for a nice night run in the mountains. You see it all in Tokyo, new and old, all kinds of car culture. I do live not far from Fuji so I get over there and I see some good ones pop up at the circuit as well. You want to see real Japan, my friend of a friend has this:

As it happens the dealer page still comes up from the summer. Here she is, the silver streak. I had a white 78 SC before, but this one is great. Oh but this isn't the 74', I was in the other one. That one is being transformed into a 934, still rough and not done.

So how is the 930 to drive?

In relation to a modern 911? I couldn't really say, I've never driven a new one. The 930 has the famous precision steering, I am getting used to the turbo as it requires some getting used to. The SC was great, same feel but the turbo is punchy and while the steering is great you do need to think ahead depending on the situation. There really is nothing like them, I think James May did a ride along video in his red one and talked a bit about it.

How is the turbo lag? Any upgrades? Is the handling really that bad?

Its powerful so you do need to pay attention. The handling is great, I think it just takes a good relationship with it and some skill haha, something not many people who bought one had. Its a serious car persons car, not a dentist who wanted a nice sports car. In the right hands it will do some amazing things. Some cars are easy to drive to the limit, these are not but they reward practice. Personally I don't like new cars, I want the gritty feel.

We may upgrade the suspension with something like the Elephant racing products GT3 style made for the 930. Not sure yet.

If it were me, I would say do it. I am not a purist. I say since we have better technology now, why force ourselves to live in the past. It would be like keeping a PC on XP rather than upgrading it because you wanted to keep it original.

Elephant racing makes products that work with the original points, it in no way hurts the car and is completely reversible. We have pretty much decided on a few bits for both cars.
